Visit a cosmopolitan city, like Boston, what do you expect to? You definitely want to avoid spending much money but obtaining limited experience and information from a trip. If you are keen to absorb more, there is a chance to get something different like advancing leadership skills and global view.
Flat World Foundation (FWF) is a non-profit organization that is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The organization is devoted to promoting globalization and youths’ leadership, such as setting up the Global Youths Business Leadership Program and the Business Globalization Forum that helps business leaders around the world.
FWF has developed a program this summer. “City and Me” is its latest program targeting youths who want to improve skills in leadership.
On this program, FWF collaborates with four powerful partners: the Boston Planning and Development Agency, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway and Webster Bank. Along with our own activities, each of them will also offer a unique and great experience to our visiting group onsite.
Eligibility:
Students in grades 7 and up is eligible to participate.
· Session 1: “Smart City” in A Seminar & Discussion
Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) plays a role in shaping the city. Their mission is to make Boston a better place to live, work and connect.
Smart City is an innovative concept to describe a future foundation of cities. Cities are digitally transforming to improve environmental, financial, and social aspects of urban life, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).
Building a smart city is a trend with “common platforms increasing efficiency, data being shared across systems, and IT investments tied to smart missions.” With cameras and data tracks, scanning and facial recognition, more and more digital transformations collect big data but also potentially threaten the privacy of individuals.
Come to join this cutting-edge topic colloquium with experts from BPDA to learn how Smart City works in the future and discuss the ethics of big data.
· Session 2: With Joy in Green Spaces
Besides Red Sox, lobsters, Dunkin’ Donuts and the city’s revolutionary history, what else can be the name card for Boston? The Big Dig infrastructure project is one of the answers. In 1982, the city enacted to start the “largest and hardest program in America”—to dig channels across the river underneath the Downtown area to connect the islands, interstates and main streets. The “crazy idea” came true in 2002.
The final part of the Big Dig program was to build the greenway on the top of underground channels to make a beautiful city and engage the community. The greenway is named after Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Her son, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, played an important role in establishing the Greenway. She is also the mother of former U.S. president John F. Kennedy.
Every night, twelve vertical glass and steel sculptures illuminate the Wharf District Parks plaza between Milk and India Streets with joyful colors. This unique system of LED lights is programmed to show up to 16.7 million different colors, along with an array of patterns, speed and intensity.
Students will have a great chance with the staff of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway together to explore more urban landscape designs in Boston and to enjoy the local food, music and also beautiful views.
· Session 3: Finance Works in a City
How does a major city like Boston manage its financial system that keeps the city running? The Webster Bank will offer hospitality to students and explain how the city works financially, how to manage personal finance, and how to set up a startup company as entrepreneur.
· Session 4: Cultural Journey in Boston
Our last stop will be very exciting as well. Boston enjoys a great reputation as the “brain” of America. It is the home of Harvard, Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT), Tufts, Brandies, Boston College, Boston University, and many more colleges and universities. They fill the city with energy and innovation. Our group will visit Harvard University, MIT campus and labs, and learn how labs run and how to connect academic achievements with industries.
What’s more, students will walk the Freedom Trail to check out how revolutionary pioneers fought for freedom. At Quincy Market, everyone will get to play the bartering game. Students will accept a challenge to use their observation and communication skills to exchange one item for another. If the price of final item is higher than the original, it will be a success.
Transportation Product/App Creation Course
MAKE YOUR OWN PRODUCT. It is a hands-on course that the students will learn how to design and make their
own products or a mobile application that can improve the traffic or commuter experience in Boston.
